Mon 28 Nov - Workshops Galore!

Monday 28th – Another great day in the workshops learning about studio photography skills and digital visualisation.  Loving all the inductions – so many options and ideas – and so little time to explore it all.  It’s like being in a sweetie shop!

Learnt it is possible to edit someone else’s work whilst cleaning a house for a friend whose coming to stay, researching ethics in advertising and writing a Research and Communications Skills blog!  Also learnt I need to go to bed earlier and there still aren’t enough hours in the day!

Sat 26, Sun 27 Nov - Weekend Stuff

Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th – Tried to put all my learning into order in my technical and contextual files and in my sketchbook and work on Christmas shopping, postage and card writing. Learnt there aren’t enough hours in the day!

Fri 25 Nov - Digital Print

Friday 25th – Was all about Digital Print design.  Although completely new to me I learnt that a great teacher can help you achieve a lot in a short period of time.  Photoshop is just one of those pieces of software that you will learn something new in everyday.  I am in awe of its capabilities and overwhelmed by its possibilities for my work - can’t wait to learn how to print my actual design onto fabric using the digital printer.

I learnt my daughter has an interview at Emmanuel College, Cambridge for medicine – way to go Lizze!  Fridays are the best.

Thurs 24 Nov - Pictograms

Thursday 24th – My tutorial really helped me think about new directions for my work.  Following a trip to the library I learnt all about Pictograms and Icons, the range of fashion accessories that I could possibly design and graphic techniques that might help me with my project.

I learnt that my son’s year had outperformed all other years at King’s School, Romsey Road, at his GCSE certificate evening – which put all his effort into context – well done Rod on your stellar results.

Post Your Thoughts on Terrence Malick's Films

  • If you are lover or hater of Terrence Malick's films I would love to hear any academic opinions on his work or if you know of any interviews he has ever given.

Wed 23 Nov - Harp Playing

Wednesday 23rd - I learnt to play Gluck’s Dance from “Alceste” a little better on my harp!

I learnt my daughter has an interview at Bristol for medicine – yeah!

Tues 22 Nov - Films of Terrence Malick

Tuesday 22nd - I watched more Terrence Malick films for project inspiration and learnt that he doesn’t give interviews, has only made 5 films and had a 20 year break between his 2nd and 3rd film.

His films very much divide opinion – some critics believe he is another Stanley Kubrick because of his reluctance to discuss his movies, his non linear narrative and his desire to make movies according to his own taste and aesthetic that adhere to few time pressures.  His latest film, The Tree of Life (which won the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year), took three years to release because of his meticulous attention to technical detail.  Some critics find his elements of surrealism and his use of metaphor over indulgent and his use of non linear narrative confusing – leaving them wondering what it is all meant to be about.

I love his films because they are so beautiful to look at – a real visual treat – take a look at his work – I’d love to know what you think.

Mon 21 Nov - Woven Pleats

Monday 21st - Thanks to a great tutor I learnt to weave pleats.  This was a revelation as I thought woven fabrics were typically flat.  I discovered my pleats could be different sizes, different widths apart, different colours on one side from another and that they could be sliced or ironed in different directions.  LOVED IT!

I learnt my daughter has an interview at King’s College London for medicine – so, so proud!

What i learnt this week

This is my first blog post using tumblr and since I love learning in a curiosity fueled, insatiable appetite kind of way I thought it only fitting that I post my fist blog about what I have learnt in the last week.

It’s been another hectic schedule on my BA Fashion & Textiles course – probably because I am making things much too complicated for myself - but I’ve learnt loads.
